What is Oocyte Imaging?
Oocyte imaging is a non-invasive technology to assess egg quality and health before fertilization. It captures detailed images of the egg’s internal structures, such as the meiotic spindle, which plays a crucial role in ensuring healthy embryo development.

Why is Oocyte Imaging Important?
Oocyte imaging helps embryologists identify eggs most likely to develop into healthy embryos. By examining the egg’s internal structures, they can determine if the egg is mature and ready for ICSI. Healthier eggs typically lead to higher fertilization rates, which can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.
What Can Oocyte Imaging Show About My Eggs?
Oocyte imaging provides a closer look at:
- The Meiotic Spindle: This essential structure in the egg ensures correct chromosome alignment, which is critical for embryo health. With the meiotic spindle in view, embryologists can avoid damaging the meiotic spindle during ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).
- Egg Maturity: Oocyte imaging can confirm if eggs are at the optimal maturity stage for ICSI, helping to avoid the injection of immature eggs, which may have lower fertilization potential.
- Timing Adjustments: If the meiotic spindle isn’t visible during the first check, the embryologist will delay performing ICSI to give the egg more time to mature, improving the chances of a successful outcome. If the spindle appears disorganized, ICSI will also be delayed until the spindle stabilizes.
