Preserving Your Fertility — Sperm Freezing

Alpha IVF & Women’s Specialists offers men the opportunity to preserve their fertility through sperm freezing (sperm cryopreservation). This service allows sperm to be safely frozen and stored for future use in assisted reproduction.

Sperm banking is performed using advanced cryopreservation techniques to ensure high post-thaw survival and function.

We are proud to have achieved the world’s first successful pregnancy using freeze-thawed sperm, freeze-thawed eggs, and freeze-thawed embryos (10th Royal College of O&G International Scientific Congress, June 2012).

What is Sperm Freezing?

Sperm freezing is a procedure in which a man’s sperm is collected, frozen, and stored for future fertility use. When needed, the frozen sperm can be thawed and used for fertility treatments such as IVF or ICSI.

The Technology

Modern cryopreservation methods are designed to protect sperm cells during freezing and thawing. With optimized freezing media and strict laboratory protocols, sperm can be stored long-term while maintaining good survival and fertilization potential after thawing.

Our lab follows stringent quality control standards to ensure safe handling and storage.

How Do You Freeze Your Sperm?

Before entering the sperm freezing program, you will first be screened for transmissible diseases. The process then includes:

  • Providing a semen sample at the laboratory
  • Sample analysis to assess count, motility, and quality
  • Mixing with protective freezing solution
  • Dividing into storage vials or straws
  • Freezing and storing securely in liquid nitrogen tanks for future use

In certain cases (such as medical conditions or difficulty producing a sample), alternative sperm retrieval methods can be discussed with the doctor.

Who Should Consider Sperm Freezing?

You may wish to consider sperm freezing if:

  • You are about to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • You are scheduled for surgery or medical treatment that may affect fertility
  • You have a declining sperm count or quality
  • You work in high-risk occupations or environments
  • You want backup sperm stored before IVF/ICSI treatment
  • You are planning a vasectomy but want future fertility options

Storing frozen sperm gives men the opportunity to preserve their fertility for future family planning.

Why Consider Sperm Freezing?

Male fertility can be affected by age, medical treatments, lifestyle factors, and health conditions. Some treatments may permanently reduce sperm production.

With current medical technology, sperm can be preserved at a time when quality is optimal and used later when you are ready to start a family. There is generally no strict age limit for sperm freezing as long as viable sperm can be collected.
